Floating PLTS in Saguling: 60MW Powering Indonesia’s Clean Energy Future

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

West Bandung, Indonesia Construction has begun⁢ on a 60 MWAC floating solar power ‍plant⁢ (PLTS) at the Saguling Reservoir in West Bandung ⁣Regency, West Java, a project spearheaded by PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) and Indo Acwa Saguling Staff. ⁤The‌ initiative, launched Saturday, ⁣October 5, 2024, is expected to generate over 130 GWH of⁢ electricity annually – enough to power approximately 50,000⁤ households – ⁣and reduce ‌carbon emissions by 104,000 tons of CO2 per year.

The ‌Saguling PLTS is⁣ designated‍ a National Strategic⁢ Project⁢ (PSN) under Presidential regulation No. 109 of 2020 and supports Indonesia’s goal of ⁤achieving Net Zero Emission by 2060. ‍

“This project is not only a symbol of our commitment ⁢to the transition of⁣ clean energy, but also a tangible form of PLN ⁢Indonesia Power’s contribution in strengthening regional energy security ‍and providing direct benefits to the ⁤surrounding community,” stated PLN IP President Director Bernadus Sudarmanta.

The project will adhere to international Environmental and Social Management ⁤System (ESMS) standards. Utilizing floating⁢ PV⁣ technology is expected to reduce water evaporation ⁤and enhance solar panel efficiency through⁤ lower operating temperatures.⁣ Less than 5% of the Saguling Reservoir’s total surface area will be used, ensuring no disruption to its primary functions as a hydroelectric power source‌ and for irrigation.

Beyond its energy production, the Saguling PLTS⁢ is designed to bolster the reliability of ‌the regional power grid, ⁣serving as a reserve electricity⁢ resource during emergencies⁢ and outages ‌in West Bandung and surrounding areas.
