Israel Seizes Final Flotilla Boat, Prepares Deportations as Additional Vessels Head for Gaza
Ashdod, Israel – israeli naval forces intercepted and seized the final vessel participating in a Gaza-bound flotilla on Tuesday, completing a sweep of the group and preparing to deport hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists. The move comes as organizers announced additional ships are already en route to the besieged coastal enclave, raising the prospect of further confrontations.
The latest ship seized, the Lynn, was boarded by Israeli commandos approximately 200 nautical miles off the coast of Gaza, according to an Israeli military spokesperson. No violence was reported during the interception. Authorities stated they had repeatedly warned the flotilla against attempting to breach the Israeli naval blockade of Gaza, which has been in place since 2007, and offered to deliver any humanitarian aid through established channels. the blockade is maintained by Israel and Egypt, with Israel asserting it is necessary to prevent weapons from reaching Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza.
The interception concludes a multi-day operation targeting the “Freedom Flotilla Coalition,” comprised of ships from multiple nations carrying activists and aid intended for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, who are facing dire humanitarian conditions exacerbated by the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Israeli authorities have stated that approximately 500 activists were detained during the operation and are being processed for deportation.
“We are acting to prevent a breach of the blockade and to ensure that any aid reaches Gaza through official channels, where it can be properly inspected and distributed to those in need,” a statement from the Israel Defense Forces read.
Organizers of the flotilla condemned the Israeli actions as a violation of international law and a suppression of humanitarian efforts. “This is a blatant act of piracy and a denial of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people,” said a spokesperson for the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. “We will continue to challenge this illegal blockade and to bring attention to the suffering in Gaza.”
The latest attempt to break the blockade coincides with heightened international scrutiny of Israel’s military operations in Gaza and growing concerns over the humanitarian crisis unfolding there. The UN and various aid organizations have repeatedly called for increased access to Gaza and a lifting of restrictions on the flow of goods and people. Further flotilla attempts could strain relations with international partners and escalate tensions in the region.
