A terrorist incident unfolded at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Crumpsall, Manchester, England, on Thursday, leaving two people dead and prompting a swift response from Greater Manchester Police. The attacker, who drove a vehicle toward the synagogue and afterward attacked people with a knife while wearing what appeared to be an explosive vest, was fatally shot by officers within seven minutes of the initial emergency call.
The attack occurred around the time of morning services for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement-a solemn Jewish holiday marked by fasting, prayer, and reflection that began at sundown Wednesday. The incident has prompted an outpouring of support from community and religious leaders across the U.K., underscoring the vulnerability of religious institutions and the broader impact of extremist violence. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack and assessing any potential wider threats.
Chief Constable Watson stated that the driver “attacked people with a knife” and “was wearing about his body a vest which had the appearance of an explosive device.” Armed officers intercepted the offender and fatally shot him.
Leaders from the British Christian and Muslim communities quickly offered support and prayers for the Jewish community. Qari Asim and DioManchester both posted statements on X (formerly Twitter) expressing solidarity.
The inquiry is ongoing.
