Fugitive Arrested in Texas Linked to 2023 Murder in Mexico
SPLENDORA, Texas – Leo Acosta Sánchez, 22, has been recaptured in Splendora, Texas, by the Police Department’s Criminal Interdiction Unit (CIU) in collaboration with federal agencies. Sánchez was a fugitive wanted in connection with the August 14, 2023, murder of Fidel González, 27, in Veracruz, Mexico.
According to authorities, González was shot at his home following a discussion with Acosta Sánchez. Reports indicate she asked him to leave her residence, stating she wanted to resolve their issues, before he was fatally shot by other individuals.
Sánchez, also known as ‘Michelle,’ was initially released in May 2024 under the previous administration, despite being sought by Interpol. This release reportedly circumvented deportation and legal processing in Mexico.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Acosta Sánchez entered the United States as a non-immigrant on August 20, 2023, and afterward violated the terms of her admission. She had been living in the U.S. undocumented.
Law enforcement officials emphasized the coordinated effort that led to Sánchez’s re-arrest, highlighting their determination to pursue justice despite earlier setbacks. The capture is part of a broader regional initiative to prevent individuals from evading prosecution by crossing the U.S.-Mexico border.
The Splendora Police Department stated the persistence and teamwork of the CIU and its federal partners were crucial in bringing Sánchez to face the pending charges.
