LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KFOX14/CBS4) – New Mexico State University faces a quick turnaround, preparing to host Sam houston State this week following a loss to teh University of New Mexico on Saturday. The Aggies (0-4) will attempt to secure their first win of the season in the Conference USA matchup.
Sam Houston State enters the game also seeking its first victory, currently with a 0-4 record, but coming off a bye week. NMSU is navigating multiple injuries, notably along the offensive line, which allowed nine sacks against UNM.
“To me,it challenges your grit,” Head Coach Tony sanchez said. “We talk about being tough and having a gritty mentality. Now we are going to see if we have it.”
Sanchez emphasized the need for individual success on the offensive line. “It’s one thing if the scheme is breaking down, but it is not that,” he stated. “You have got to win your one-on-one.”
The Aggies’ defense will be challenged by Sam Houston’s air raid offense, lead by Head Coach Phil Longo, which focuses on creating mismatches and explosive plays. Sanchez highlighted tackling in space as crucial to containing the Bearkats.
“They run more swing passes than anyone,” sanchez said. “Then they will try and take the top off the defense. The biggest thing for us is tackling in space. They try to get the ball into open areas and see if you can tackle them.”
NMSU is currently a 1.5-point underdog, according to oddsmakers.
