East Rutherford, N.J.- New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers sustained a torn ACL during SundayS 21-18 win over the Los Angeles Chargers and will miss the remainder of the 2024 season, the team confirmed. The injury occurred when Nabers attempted to make a leaping catch on a deep pass from rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, but was unable to complete the jump, grabbing his leg mid-catch before going down. He was carted off the field.
nabers, the No. 6 overall selection out of LSU in the 2023 NFL Draft, had quickly become the Giants’ primary receiving threat. Entering Sunday’s game, he had 16 receptions for 251 yards, ranking fourth among NFL receivers.Despite exiting the game early,Nabers’ 35 targets this season were tied for seventh-most in the league entering Monday Night Football.
Last season, Nabers was second in the league in targets (170) behind Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase, despite playing in two fewer games. He finished his rookie campaign with 109 receptions for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns, commanding a league-high 30.7% of his team’s targets.
“Regrettably, this is a business of injury, and I feel terrible for Malik’s injury,” coach Brian Daboll said Sunday postgame. “He’s an critically important piece of our team, but … it’s the next man up.”
The Giants will now turn to Darius Slayton, who previously stepped into the WR1 role when Nabers missed two games with a concussion last season.jalin Hyatt, a 2023 third-round pick, is expected to replace Slayton as the team’s other outside receiver. Undrafted rookie Beaux Collins has also seen limited action, playing just 12 percent of the team’s offensive snaps this season.
following Nabers’ injury, former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. expressed concerns about playing surfaces on X, formerly Twitter. “Dear @NFL,I mean this with the upmost love and respect,” Beckham wrote. “We (The NFL) take all The precautions in the world with EVERYthing else when it comes to players “health” and ”safety.” PLZ.PLZ. PLZ.GET RID OF THE (angry expletive emoji) TURF. Thank You in advance. LUV.” He followed up, stating, “Respect and u kno I loveeeee the giants, but DeathLife has taken too many talented players away from the game. I kno it’s not ALL the turfs fault but at least maybe it to where we’ve gotten all research done to if TURF has to stay it’s at the HIGHEST of quality possible. At least can we start the discussion.”
