WhatsApp Image Display Glitch: Users Report Mysterious Shadows Appearing on Photos
September 26, 2025 – A perplexing visual issue is affecting some WhatsApp users, causing a dark shadow to appear on the lower section of images displayed within the messaging app.the problem, first reported by a user on the Android-hilfe.de forum under the username KleineUle, doesn’t appear to corrupt the original image files themselves.
The user described the phenomenon as a “shade” appearing on both received and sent photos within WhatsApp chats. Notably, the shadow is not present when the image is opened directly or viewed in the device’s gallery. The issue also seems to affect older images within chat histories,as well as placeholder images previously displayed in chats.
“Pictures that I get, or pictures I send have a black one – I call it shade – in the lower part of the picture,” KleineUle wrote in their initial post. “If I click on the picture, it is normal (without shadow) and it is also displayed perfectly in the gallery.”
The user suspects the issue began following a recent WhatsApp update, though a specific update version wasn’t identified. Interestingly, the problem is not replicated on a device with the same operating system and whatsapp version owned by their husband.
KleineUle migrated their WhatsApp data from an older phone to a new one in early September, and the shadow issue was not present at that time. This suggests the glitch developed more recently.
While the visual anomaly is concerning,KleineUle reports no functional impairments – the original images remain unaffected when viewed outside of WhatsApp. Though, the user expressed reluctance to reinstall WhatsApp due to the complexities of the chat backup process.
As of this publication, WhatsApp has not officially acknowledged the issue or provided a fix. World-Today-News.com has reached out to WhatsApp for comment and will update this story as more facts becomes available.
