WASHINGTON, D.C.- A recent summit co-presented by Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and All Wheels Up underscored ongoing efforts to improve air travel accessibility for people with disabilities. The event, celebrated today, highlighted advancements and reaffirmed commitment to a more inclusive future for travelers.
“Today is inspiring, and we are committed to securing an even more accessible future for travelers with disabilities,” said Michele Erwin, founder and president of All Wheels Up.”We are grateful for PVA’s partnership, as well as the expertise and lived experiences shared by our speakers who helped make this event such a success.”
For over 40 years, PVA has been a leading advocate for accessible air travel, instrumental in securing the passage of the Air Carrier Access Act in 1986. The association continues to shape policy, most recently contributing to the Department of Transportation’s final rule, “Ensuring Safe Accommodations for Air Travelers with Disabilities Using wheelchairs,” finalized last year.
This new rule changes ACAA regulations to enhance the air travel experience for wheelchair users and those utilizing other assistive devices. Key improvements include prompt and flexible repair or replacement options for damaged wheelchairs, and mandatory annual hands-on training for airline employees and contractors assisting passengers with mobility disabilities.
PVA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit and the onyl congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated solely to the benefit of veterans with spinal cord injury or disease, provides comprehensive support beyond air travel advocacy. This includes ensuring veterans receive earned benefits, monitoring care in VA spinal cord injury units, and funding research for improved care and a potential cure for paralysis.
With more than 70 offices and 33 chapters serving veterans, their families, and caregivers across the united States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, PVA also focuses on training, career services, accessibility in public spaces, and health/rehabilitation opportunities through sports and recreation.
