SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina volleyball suffered a straight-set loss to Wofford on Saturday, falling to the Terriers 25-17, 25-10, and 25-11. The Southern Conference contest moves the Catamounts to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Freshmen Tatum Sharp and Samantha Kranzler each tallied four kills for Western Carolina. Junior Katie Boney recorded her sixth double-double of the season, and second consecutive, with 22 assists and 10 digs, adding a career-high tying three kills.
Wofford was led by Bradley Brown’s 16 kills on 19 swings for a .842 hitting percentage, along with a match-high six blocks. Chloe Smith contributed nine kills with a .474 attack percentage and a team-best 17 digs. Taylor Pecht and Maddy Frazier finished with 20 and 16 assists, respectively, while Laney Klika added 11 digs.
The first set was closely contested early, with neither team establishing a lead larger then two points. A 4-1 run by Wofford gave them a 19-15 advantage, prompting a Western Carolina timeout. The Terriers closed out the set with a 6-2 run, winning 25-17.
Wofford dominated the second set, opening with a 9-2 run and later extending their lead with an 11-4 run to secure a 25-10 victory.
The Terriers continued their momentum into the third set,starting with a 9-3 burst. Western Carolina narrowed the gap to 11-7, but Wofford responded with a 7-1 run to lead 18-8, forcing another Catamount timeout. Wofford finished the set with a 7-2 run, winning 25-11 and completing the sweep.
Western Carolina will return home to begin its 2025 Southern Conference schedule, hosting ETSU on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., and UNCG the following evening at 5 p.m. The ETSU match is designated as the “Beat the Bucs” Blackout, encouraging fans to wear black WCU gear. Saturday’s contest against UNCG will be Kids at the Court & Neon Night.
