Historic Milwaukee Business Park Houses World’s Largest ‍Theatre Pipe Organ, Open to Public This Weekend

FRANKLIN, wis. – A Franklin business park is home ⁤to a hidden gem: the world’s largest theater pipe organ, housed‍ within Carma Laboratories, the maker of Carmex lip balm. ⁢The instrument, a meticulously preserved piece of history, will be open to the public this Saturday, september 27, ‌from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as⁤ part of Doors Open Milwaukee.

For decades, the organ remained largely ‌unknown outside of select circles. Now, owner Paul woelbing is hoping to introduce the instrument – and the captivating world of organ music – to a‍ new generation. “Hopefully young people come in,” Woelbing said. “See this and get interested in organ music.”

The organ’s presence ⁤at Carma Labs is a unique blend of industrial practicality and artistic preservation. ⁤Woelbing acquired ⁢the instrument in pieces and spent years restoring it within the facility. The result is a breathtaking ⁣instrument capable of producing a vast⁣ range of sounds, from classic fanfares and movie soundtracks to unexpected modern twists.

During a⁣ recent exhibition, Woelbing showcased the organ’s ‍versatility with ⁢a ⁢rendition of ‍Britney Spears’ “Toxic,” delighting audience members. “I loved⁤ being able to hear Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic,'” said attendee Sophie Riedel, who attended⁤ with her family. “That⁤ made my whole night.”

The performance culminated in a rousing ⁣encore of ⁤Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which brought the warehouse ⁤to life. Sami Riedel,‌ also in ‍attendance with her ⁢family, shared, “Me and my siblings, we grew up with that‌ song. When I heard that I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is probably going to ‌be one of the best songs ‌here.’ ⁣”

The public‍ is invited to experience the organ firsthand during⁣ Doors Open Milwaukee. More information ⁤can be found at https://historicmilwaukee.org/doors-open/buildings/carma-laboratories-inc-carmex/.
