Shanghai, China – World Rowing Federation officials have lauded Shanghai’s successful hosting of the World rowing Championships, the event’s first time being held in China, at a press conference on Thursday. Officials expressed strong satisfaction with the organization, facilities, and overall experience for athletes and teams.
“We are very thrilled and happy to come to Shanghai. The preparations behind this event have been huge but great,” said World Rowing President Jean-Christophe Rolland, highlighting the excellent conditions and infrastructure. He added, “The organizing committee is performing well, and we look forward to witnessing exciting final days.”
Rolland emphasized the championships’ potential to foster rowing’s growth in China, stating, “We have been preparing this event and trying to promote it through different channels that will lead to more participation, especially children, in this sport. We do expect a great sporting legacy in rowing for the future, as rowing will be more visible in this country.”
Looking ahead, World Rowing plans to deepen its engagement with China. Executive Director Vincent Gaillard noted the federation is “discussing certain legacy initiatives for the future, one of which we will announce shortly next week,” and expressed enthusiasm for “bringing more events to Shanghai and China in general,” with a focus on collaboration with the Chinese rowing association and cities nationwide.
Beyond event hosting, World Rowing will provide technical expertise to the upcoming National Games in November, supporting both traditional rowing and the emerging Olympic discipline of beach sprint rowing, which will debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
the federation also outlined its commitment to enhancing the sport’s appeal through technological advancements, including continued use of drone coverage and exploration of on-boat cameras and enhanced data integration for broadcasts, aiming to improve the viewer experience.
