Samsung‍ Hints at AI Customization ‍in One‌ UI ‍8.5, Potentially Allowing Users to Swap Gemini

Seoul, South Korea – September 24, 2024 – Samsung may soon empower ‍users to select thier preferred artificial intelligence model within the company’s One UI ‌8.5 software, moving beyond the‌ current exclusive integration of Google’s Gemini. This potential shift, revealed through code analysis and confirmed‌ by‍ Samsung’s Head of Mobile Experience, TM Roh,‍ signals a move towards greater user control and flexibility‌ within the ‌samsung ecosystem.

currently, Gemini powers several on-device and cloud-based AI features across⁢ compatible Samsung Galaxy devices, including Circle to Search, Note Assist, and ⁣real-time translation. However, the anticipated update could introduce a framework ‍allowing users to choose alternative AI engines to ‌handle these tasks, potentially opening the door to models⁢ from companies like OpenAI or others. This development arrives as Samsung navigates a landscape of rapidly evolving AI technology and increasing consumer demand for personalized experiences. The change is⁣ expected to roll out with One UI 8.5, currently slated for release in late 2024/early 2025.

According to Roh, speaking at a recent tech conference, “We are actively exploring ways to give our users more choice when it comes to AI. We understand that different people have different preferences, and we want to ensure that everyone can benefit from the power of AI in a way that suits them best.”

The implications of this ⁣change are significant. Users dissatisfied with Gemini’s performance or concerned about data privacy could opt ⁣for alternative AI solutions. Developers could also be incentivized to optimize their AI models for Samsung devices, fostering a more competitive and innovative AI landscape. Samsung has⁤ not yet confirmed a specific timeline for ⁤the rollout of this feature or ⁤a list ⁣of compatible ⁢AI models beyond Gemini.
