Copenhagen Airport Halts Traffic Following Drone Sightings
COPENHAGEN, Denmark – All air traffic at Copenhagen Airport, Scandinavia’s second-busiest, was temporarily suspended on September 23, 2025, at approximately 20:00 CEST following reported drone sightings in the vicinity. The disruption led to flight redirections and cancellations, impacting travel throughout the region, including connections to Germany.Authorities have yet to determine the origin or intent behind the drone activity.
The sudden closure underscores growing concerns about airspace security and the potential for disruption caused by unauthorized drone operation near critical infrastructure. Copenhagen-Kastrup Airport handles over 30 million passengers annually, serving as a key transportation hub for Denmark and the wider Nordic region. The incident raises questions about the effectiveness of current counter-drone measures and the vulnerability of major airports to similar incidents.Investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the sightings and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
According to reports from Danish radio station DR and the German news agency dpa, at least two late flights bound for Hamburg and Berlin, and also one arriving from Frankfurt, were canceled Monday evening. Several othre flights experienced delays, with some aircraft diverted to Billund Airport, located west of Copenhagen, to await clearance for landing. The extent of the disruption and the duration of the traffic suspension remain unclear as of this report.
