Actor Billy Eichner Urges Everyday Citizens to Speak Out Against Rising Extremism
Los Angeles, CA – Actor and writer Billy Eichner is calling on individuals beyond the realm of celebrity to actively oppose escalating extremist rhetoric and potential violence, emphasizing that every voice holds power in safeguarding democratic values. In a recent statement, Eichner underscored the importance of ethical, passionate engagement in the face of growing threats, particularly concerning gun violence and increasingly divisive discourse.
Eichner,a four-time Emmy nominee known for Billy on the Street and Bros, stressed the need to counter what he sees as a hazardous normalization of harmful ideologies. “we need to speak up in ethical ways – not violently, but passionately,” he stated. “Speaking up matters. It matters even if you don’t have a big following, if you’re not an entertainer. I think it counts even more.” He believes that commentary from public figures can sometimes be dismissed as predictable, making the voices of ordinary citizens all the more impactful.
The actor’s comments come amid a national climate of heightened political tension and increasing instances of extremist activity.Eichner specifically highlighted the Democratic Party’s efforts to limit gun violence, while acknowledging he doesn’t agree with every position the party takes. He urged individuals to engage in activism in ways comfortable to them, suggesting actions ranging from conversations with children about school environments to participation in protests and utilizing social media platforms. “I know there is power in numbers here,” he said.
Eichner cautioned that the current situation is not unprecedented in history, but warned that inaction could lead to a worsening of conditions for all socioeconomic classes. “This is not just about hollywood. Every voice counts. It can and will get worse if we don’t speak up. We’ve got to speak up,” he emphasized.
Eichner’s career includes roles in Disney’s The Lion King (2019) and Mufasa: The Lion King, and also television series such as Parks and Recreation, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, and Tough People. He also served as a guest host on Jimmy kimmel Live in 2020.
