Independence Square in Paramaribo was the site of commemorations today marking the birthday of Jagernath Lachmon, a pivotal figure in Surinamese history, where former President and VHP chairman Chan santokhi called for national unity and a renewed commitment to peace. The event, which included wreath-laying ceremonies, underscored the enduring relevance of Lachmon’s message of fraternity and tolerance as foundational elements for Suriname’s sustainable growth.
Santokhi linked Lachmon’s birthday to both Suriname’s national day of fraternization and unity, and the United Nations’ International Day of peace, emphasizing that lasting peace begins wiht individual commitment. Amidst global conflicts and human rights concerns, Santokhi stressed the importance of Surinamese citizens actively championing peace and tolerance within their own society. This call to action comes at a critical juncture for suriname, as the nation navigates diverse perspectives and seeks to build a cohesive future. The VHP, even as an opposition party, will continue to prioritize and promote this vision of fraternity, Santokhi affirmed.
“International peace starts in the hearts of people,” Santokhi stated, highlighting the need for internal harmony to contribute to global stability. He cautioned against divisive rhetoric, especially on social media, and asserted that political parties and leaders have a duty to denounce such expressions.

That is the message that we have to give our young people,” he said. the VHP chairman concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to representing all Surinamese citizens, “regardless of origin or political color,” recognizing this as a core responsibility.
