The town of Brivio, Italy, is in mourning following the deaths of two 21-year-old women struck by a car on Wednesday evening.Milena Marangon and Giorgia Cagliani were walking along the roadside, en route to a village festival in Airuno, when the incident occurred.
According to initial reports, the young women were walking on the edge of the carriageway, an area lacking a sidewalk, when a sedan collided with a parked vehicle before striking them. One victim died instantly, while the other succumbed to her injuries shortly after, despite the rapid response of emergency services. A third friend, aged 20, was present at the scene but unharmed.
Investigation Underway
The driver of the vehicle, a 30-year-old man of foreign origin, was immediately arrested following preliminary assessments of his condition. Authorities are investigating whether impairment played a role in the accident.
The Carabinieri of the Merate company (Lecco) are currently investigating the precise causes and circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary findings suggest the driver may have attempted to avoid another vehicle before losing control and colliding with the parked car and the two pedestrians, near a road intersection.
