Intel and NVIDIA Partner to Challenge AMD
Intel and NVIDIA have announced a significant partnership, with NVIDIA investing $5 billion for a 4.9% stake in Intel. This collaboration will see NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX video controllers integrated into select Intel data center and consumer processors. The move signals a broader commitment to multi-product cooperation, leveraging NVIDIA’s AI and accelerated processing systems with Intel’s processors and X86 architecture.
“This collaboration closely dates back to NVIDIA’s artificial intelligence and accelerated processing systems with Intel processors and the ecosystem of X86 architecture. We will jointly extend our ecosystems and put the foundations for the next era of computing,” stated NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang.
Initially, concerns arose regarding the future of Intel’s own graphics controller division, wich develops integrated graphics for laptops and desktops, as well as standalone Intel Arc video cards compatible with both Intel and AMD processors. Though, Intel quickly clarified that it remains committed to its existing graphics roadmap and does not intend to eliminate the department. Processors featuring NVIDIA GeForce controllers will be positioned as complementary offerings, not replacements.
The partnership is widely seen as a strategic move to counter AMD’s dominance. NVIDIA and Intel each have strengths and weaknesses in different market segments. By combining forces, they aim to offer a more competitive solution, particularly in areas like embedded systems and handheld devices where AMD has held an advantage by providing integrated processor and graphics solutions. This collaboration could reshape the competitive landscape in the long run, possibly disrupting AMD’s position in key markets.
