YouTube Bets on AI to Democratize Creation,CEO Neal Mohan Says
SAN BRUNO,Calif. – YouTube is positioning artificial intelligence as its next major innovation, building on a two-decade history of empowering creators, according to CEO Neal Mohan. In a recent interview at YouTube’s California headquarters, Mohan detailed how the company is leveraging Google‘s AI technology to expand creative possibilities for users, from generating visuals for podcasts to integrating users into videos.
Mohan, who took the helm of YouTube in 2023 following the passing of former CEO Susan wojcicki after a battle with cancer, emphasized the platform’s foundational insight. He recalled being struck by the founders’ early realization that people weren’t just interested in sharing videos, but in watching them – a “big bang inflection point” that continues to drive YouTube’s mission “to give everyone a voice and show them the world.”
despite ongoing debate about whether YouTube would thrive as an independent entity, Mohan firmly believes the platform’s success is directly linked to its integration with Google. “I don’t believe YouTube would be where it is if it weren’t part of Google,” he stated, citing the ability to make long-term investments in areas like streaming and podcasting. He also pointed to YouTube’s continued innovation, challenging established media and fending off competition in the creator economy.
YouTube’s breadth of content – ranging from 15-second shorts to 15-hour livestreams – remains a key differentiator from platforms like TikTok and Reels,Mohan noted.
Recent announcements showcase the company’s AI ambitions, including features that allow users to insert themselves into videos and automatically generate visuals for podcasts. Mohan frames these advancements as a continuation of youtube’s core principle: “With AI, it’s the same core principle-how do we use technology to democratize creation?” He echoed the platform’s original goal, stating that, just as it did 20 years ago, YouTube is focused on using technology to amplify voices.
