Serbia’s Vucic Criticizes EU Sanctions on Russia as Ineffective
BELGRADE – Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic stated that the European Union’s sanctions imposed on Russia regarding the war in Ukraine are unlikely too resolve the conflict, in an exclusive interview with Nikkei ahead of his September 16-20 visit to Japan.
Vucic’s comments reflect a growing skepticism within Serbia regarding the efficacy of Western sanctions and highlight the country’s delicate balancing act as it seeks EU membership while maintaining close ties with Russia. The Serbian leader predicted the fighting between Russia and Ukraine will continue for at least another six months.
The President’s remarks come as the EU continues to debate further rounds of sanctions against Moscow, aiming to increase pressure on the Kremlin to de-escalate the war.Though, Vucic believes this approach is counterproductive. Serbia has refrained from joining the EU’s sanctions regime against Russia, a position that has drawn criticism from some Western nations but reflects strong public sentiment within Serbia and notable economic relationships with Russia.
