Rangers Name J.T. Miller captain Following Trouba Trade
NEW YORK – J.T. Miller has been named the 29th captain in New York rangers history, the team announced Tuesday. The appointment comes after defenseman Jacob Trouba was traded to the Anaheim Ducks on December 6th.
“We’re pleased to announce J.T. Miller as the new captain of the New York Rangers,” said General Manager chris Drury. “Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to conduct ourselves both on and off the ice.”
Miller, 32, quickly established himself as a key player after being acquired in a trade from the Vancouver Canucks on January 31st. He recorded 35 points (13 goals, 22 assists) in 41 games with the Rangers last season, finishing tied for 11th in NHL scoring from February 1st onward with 35 points. Notably, he was the only player to achieve at least 35 points and 75 hits during that stretch, and also surpassed 70 points and 160 hits across the entire season. Miller also boasts a strong face-off record, with a 58.3% win percentage, ranking fifth in the League among players taking at least 15% of their team’s face-offs.
Originally drafted by the Rangers in the first round (15th overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft,Miller has amassed 709 points (260 goals,449 assists) in 871 regular-season games. He reached career highs with 37 goals and 103 points while playing for Vancouver in the 2023-24 season. Miller has also appeared in 91 Stanley Cup Playoff games,registering 56 points (12 goals,44 assists),and was a member of the Rangers team that reached the 2014 Stanley Cup Final,ultimately falling to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.

The Boston Bruins remain the only NHL team currently without a designated captain.
