Cleveland, Mississippi – Delta State University canceled classes and all events commemorating it’s 100th anniversary after a body was discovered on campus Monday morning, university officials announced.
The discovery was made by Delta State staff at the small, rural campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, according to a university statement. Local police where instantly contacted and launched an examination into the death.
All classes and Centennial events planned to celebrate the school’s milestone anniversary were canceled as authorities investigated. “At this time, we have no further details to share. Out of respect for the individual and their loved ones, we will refrain from additional comment until authorities release more information,” the university said.
It is currently unknown if the deceased was a student or staff member. The cause and nature of death have not been released. The independent has contacted Delta State university and the Cleveland Police Department for further information.
Counseling and support services are available to students, faculty, and staff. While details remain limited, university officials stated that the campus is safe.
“We will share updates when appropriate and ask for your thoughts and compassion during this arduous time,” the school wrote.
The university had planned a full day of Centennial activities,including ceremonies,a reception,and a raffle,as advertised on a now-canceled Facebook event.It is unclear whether the celebration will be rescheduled.
