Pterostilbene Shows Promise as a Novel Anti-Aging Ingredient in New clinical Study
Driven by growing consumer demand for effective anti-aging solutions, researchers in China have conducted a promising clinical trial evaluating the benefits of pterostilbene, a natural compound, in a skincare emulsion. The 28-day study, published in the Journal of Dermatologic Science and Cosmetic Technology, involved 31 participants and utilized a rigorous double-blind,split-face methodology – comparing results on the left and right sides of each participantS face.
The research team assessed the efficacy of a skincare emulsion containing 0.1% pterostilbene against a control emulsion, employing both advanced instrumental measurements and participant self-assessments. Results demonstrated statistically significant improvements in several key areas of skin health with the pterostilbene formulation.
Specifically, the study revealed enhanced skin elasticity and firmness, alongside a visible reduction in wrinkles, including those commonly found on the forehead, under the eyes, and around the outer corners of the eyes (Crow’s feet). Further analysis indicated that the pterostilbene emulsion contributed to a thicker epidermis, increased levels of collagen and elastin fibers, and a reduction in the appearance of skin pores.
“We observed remarkable improvements across multiple skin parameters,” explains Zhiyuan Chen, co-author of the study and Founder of Guangzhou Luanying Cosmetics Co., Ltd. ”Participants also consistently reported higher satisfaction levels with the pterostilbene emulsion compared to the control.”
Corresponding author Xueping Chen believes these findings represent a significant step forward in understanding the potential of pterostilbene in skincare. “This research provides compelling evidence of pterostilbene’s potent anti-aging properties and supports its inclusion as an active ingredient in cosmetic formulations,” she states. “It also opens up exciting possibilities for leveraging natural compounds in the development of innovative skincare products.”
While the results are encouraging, the researchers acknowledge the need for further inquiry. They propose conducting a longer-term study to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the long-lasting effects of pterostilbene on skin health and aging. This research could possibly reshape the future of anti-aging skincare, offering a new and effective approach to combating the visible signs of aging.
