Frist Nile Virus Fatality Confirmed in Extremadura, Health Officials Issue Prevention Guidance
Mérida, Extremadura – Health authorities in Extremadura have confirmed the region’s first death linked to West Nile virus infection, prompting a public health alert and renewed recommendations for preventative measures. The fatality, details of which have not been publicly released, underscores the increasing risk posed by the virus as mosquito activity peaks across the region.
The case marks a significant growth in the ongoing West Nile virus activity detected in Extremadura this summer. While infections are frequently enough mild, the virus can cause severe neurological illness, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly and immunocompromised. The Servicio Extremeño de Salud (SES) is urging residents to take proactive steps to minimize exposure and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds, as the virus continues to circulate.
The SES advises maintaining proper upkeep of swimming pools, ponds, and reservoirs, and removing standing water from common household items. These include objects such as plant saucers, jars, buckets, toys, pet dishes, and tires. Residents are also encouraged to cover outdoor water containers and ensure gutters and patio drains are clear of debris.
To further reduce risk, health officials recommend wearing light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, and pants when outdoors, along with closed-toe shoes.Avoiding scented soaps, perfumes, and hairsprays, which can attract insects,is also advised. The use of authorized insect repellents and insecticides is encouraged, alongside the installation of mosquito netting on doors and windows.
