Las Vegas, NV – Forget poker adn blackjack. A new kind of competition is heating up in Las Vegas this December, and a Brit is heading to Sin City to prove his mastery of… Microsoft Excel. Ha Dang, a 33-year-old stockbroker from Leeds, has qualified for the Microsoft Excel World Championships after triumphing over 40 competitors in the inaugural British competition.
Dang will represent the UK against hundreds of rivals vying for the coveted title of “world’s best spreadsheeter,” along with a $5,000 prize and a personalized championship belt.
What’s particularly remarkable is Dang’s relatively recent entry into the world of competitive excel. He only discovered the tournaments last year, yet quickly rose to the top. ”Growing up, I have always been into working with spreadsheets but I did not find many peers with whom I could exchange my formulae and Excel tricks,” Dang explained. “It was a delight when I discovered that there is actually a worldwide competition… and it is truly amazing to be recognised by that community as a champion.”
The Rise of Excel Esports
Competitive Excel,a burgeoning form of esports, challenges players to complete complex equations and puzzles using formulas and shortcuts against the clock. The sport has gained traction in recent years, attracting a dedicated community of spreadsheet enthusiasts.
Jaq Kennedy, founder of the Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC) UK – the association hosting the British chapter – described Dang as a “revelation.” “Ha beat out the second place in last year’s world championship and another who trains for hours every night, and he only picked up the sport this year,” Kennedy said. “That is an incredible accomplishment and shows what natural talent and drive he has.”
Kennedy anticipates increased UK participation in future championships, fueled by a growing local community eager to hone their Excel skills and connect with fellow enthusiasts.
A Point of National Pride
For Dang, who immigrated to the UK from Vietnam over a decade ago to attend university, representing the country feels particularly meaningful. “Being able to represent the country that took me in is something I feel immense pride in,” he stated.
the Excel World Championships promise a unique spectacle, proving that skill and strategy can thrive even in the most unexpected arenas. Whether Dang will bring home the championship belt remains to be seen, but his story is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and a knack for spreadsheets.
