Frozen Peas & Unexpected Arrivals: Experts Urge Readiness for Labor
London, UK – New parents should pack frozen peas in their hospital bags, alongside essential items, to prepare for the unpredictable nature of labor, according to experts. A recent survey reveals the chaotic reality of childbirth, with one in twenty respondents experiencing their waters breaking in public places – from supermarkets to lifts - and fathers rushing to the maternity ward after errands.
The advice comes as parents navigate a wealth of often-conflicting details about preparing for a new arrival. Charlotte Hoskin from My Expert Midwife notes the overwhelming nature of the experience, stating, “I’ve seen all sorts of unexpected things pulled out of hospital bags on the big day, some of them quite funny! From corn on the cob to a harmonica.” The recommendation for frozen peas is a long-held tip for providing speedy, soothing relief during labor.
The survey, reported by the Daily Star, also highlighted other common mishaps, including five per cent of respondents taking the wrong motorway exit while in labor. Fathers faced their own challenges, with some nearly missing the birth while out for coffee and others accidentally sharing delivery photos to work WhatsApp groups instead of family.
Hoskin emphasizes the importance of preparation while acknowledging the inevitability of the unexpected. “Things rarely go exactly to plan, and that’s completely okay.” She has compiled a list of essential items for hospital bags, including some surprising additions.
