flu Vaccination in Santa catarina: coverage lags Despite Over 2.2 Million Doses Administered
Florianópolis, Brazil – Health officials in the state of Santa Catarina are expressing concern as flu vaccination coverage remains below target levels, despite administering over 2.26 million doses of the influenza vaccine. According to updated data released by the State Department of Health (SES), 51.18% of priority groups – pregnant women, children, and the elderly – have been vaccinated, reaching 1,926,542 individuals.
While this represents significant progress,it falls short of the 90% coverage goal set by the Ministry of Health. The campaign was expanded in May to include all residents over six months of age,but uptake has been slower then anticipated.
Key Vaccination Numbers:
* Total Doses Administered: 2,260,786
* Elderly (60+): 677,854 doses (52.3% of target population of 1,296,704)
* Children (6 months – under 6 years): 272,301 doses (48.9% of target population of 557,197)
* Pregnant women: 35,817 doses (49.3% of target population of 72,641)
* Single-Dose Vaccines: 911,079 applications
The municipalities leading the vaccination efforts are Florianópolis (184,956 doses), Joinville (179,535), Blumenau (111,629), São José (85,710), and Criciúma (83,634).
Continued Circulation a Concern
Health authorities are particularly worried about the low vaccination rates given the continued circulation of the influenza virus, even after the winter season.
“Even with the reduction in the number of cases in recent weeks, the virus continues to circulate, and people in these priority groups continue to seek the vaccine, as hospitalizations and influenza deaths have occurred mainly among children and the elderly,” explained João Augusto Fuck, Director of State Epidemiological Surveillance.
Inventory Assessment & Ongoing Availability
to prevent vaccine wastage and ensure access for those not yet vaccinated, the SES has instructed municipalities to assess their current vaccine stocks. This aims to optimize distribution and maintain a consistent supply in health facilities.
The Secretariat assures residents that the vaccine remains available while supplies last
