“Flex” Singer Cupid surprises Cedar Hill High School Band
CEDAR HILL, Texas – The Cedar Hill High School band received an unexpected and exciting visit from Bryson Bernard, the artist known as Cupid, on September 5th. The singer, famous for hits like the “Cupid Shuffle” and “Flex,” surprised students during a marching band rehearsal.
As the band practiced “Flex,” Cupid appeared at the front of the band hall, took a microphone, and joined in singing as they played. The band members, initially stunned, continued their performance before erupting in cheers and surrounding the artist with excitement.
“I was entirely in shock about how a celebrity would come to Cedar Hill,” said senior band member Terrance Phillips.
Micah Neely, a drum major who was absent during the visit, expressed her gratitude for the recognition. “Somebody that’s that big in the industry and a big part of my childhood coming to our school and recognizing us, I thought that was awesome,” she said.
The visit followed Cupid sharing a Facebook post praising the band’s performance of the song during their first football game of the season, which initially sparked excitement among the students.
Derrick Walker, Director of Fine Arts for the Cedar Hill Autonomous School district and the high school’s band director, explained, “We always like to do a little fun, little funky dance for the kids.” He noted that the positive social media response prompted Cupid to make a personal appearance during a concert tour stop in Dallas.
Cupid praised the band’s talent and enthusiasm, telling Spectrum News 1, “Those are some amazing kids. They were very talented, very gracious. You coudl tell they appreciated the visit… They were off the charts, like they did that, they sounded great. Kudos to the administration and the directors there, because they really have a great set of kids.”
He emphasized the power of music to create opportunities, stating, “the real ‘flex’ is how music opens doors for the next generation of musicians and leaders.”
Cupid encouraged the students to persevere, adding, ”I tell kids the only way you fail is when you quit. The journey is just as crucial as the goal. Keep pushing every day.” he hopes to inspire them to continue striving for success both musically and in all their endeavors.
