Dakar Man Sentenced to Prison for Online Image Abuse & Digital Identity Theft
DAKAR, Senegal - A 32-year-old truck driver, C.Dione, was sentenced to two years in prison, including three months firm, and fined 50,000 CFA francs (approximately $85 USD) by the Dakar Flagrant Tribunal this Friday for digital identity theft, illicit dissemination of personal data, and violating the privacy of his former girlfriend, D. Faye, a student. The case highlights a growing concern over the use of digital platforms for coercive control and revenge porn in Senegal.
The prosecution detailed how dione created a TikTok account using Faye’s name and published her images after their breakup, attempting to force her into sexual activity. While initially alleging threats and blackmail, Faye later told the court she ended the relationship due to Dione’s excessive focus on sex. Dione admitted to creating the account, claiming he only shared “correct” photos at Faye’s request, mirroring a pattern of sharing images on WhatsApp.However,Faye testified that Dione threatened to send videos to her mother if she refused his advances.
The prosecutor argued the actions were “serious” and requested a six-month prison sentence and a 300,000 CFA franc fine. Dione’s defense lawyer, Me Michel Ndione, pleaded for leniency. Ultimately, the court found Dione guilty, delivering a sentence intended to deter similar behavior and protect victims of digital abuse. The case underscores the increasing legal scrutiny of online harassment and the potential for severe consequences for those who misuse digital platforms to exert control over others.
