Tokyo Flooding: Rain Disrupts Air, Rail Travel

TOKYO (AP) – Torrential rainfall​ brought Tokyo to a standstill Thursday, inundating streets and disrupting both air and rail travel as a powerful storm system moved over the capital.

A concentrated downpour of 12 centimeters (4.7 inches) fell within a single hour, overwhelming drainage systems and ​triggering widespread disruption.The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for further thunderstorms overnight, urging residents to remain indoors and closely monitor weather reports.

Flights at Haneda Airport experienced notable delays ​as air traffic control and ground services were⁢ temporarily suspended due to lightning strikes. Railway operations, including the ⁣region’s high-speed ⁣bullet train network and othre⁤ commuter lines, were ⁤also halted as a safety precaution.The storm caused localized flooding across Tokyo, with some residents reporting hail.‍ Tokyo Electric ⁢Power Company Holdings reported over 7,000 homes lost‍ power during the peak of the storm, though service ⁣was largely restored by late Thursday.Authorities are continuing to assess ‍the damage and prepare for potential further impacts from ongoing inclement weather.
