LAPD Warns of Surge in “Grandparent Scam” Targeting Seniors
Los Angeles, CA – september 11, 2025, 14:17 PDT – Teh Los Angeles Police Department’s Olympic Division is issuing a critical alert regarding a dramatic increase in sophisticated online fraud schemes specifically targeting senior citizens. Dubbed “grandparent scams,” these incidents involve fraudsters impersonating family members – often grandchildren – in urgent need of funds, exploiting emotional vulnerabilities for financial gain. Authorities report a 300% rise in reported cases over the last three months, with losses totaling over $500,000.
These scams typically begin with a phone call or online message where the perpetrator poses as a grandchild, claiming to be in a crisis – such as an arrest, medical emergency, or travel mishap – and requesting immediate financial assistance. The fraudsters often instruct victims to keep the situation secret from other family members, increasing the likelihood of successful deception. the LAPD emphasizes that these schemes are emotionally manipulative and prey on the trusting nature of seniors.
“We’re seeing a very calculated and cruel trend,” stated Officer David Kim of the LAPD olympic Division. “These criminals are adept at researching their targets and crafting believable stories. they’re not just after money; they’re exploiting the deep love grandparents have for their families.”
The LAPD is partnering with the non-profit association Courage, which provides resources and support to victims of elder fraud, to raise awareness and offer preventative education. Courage representatives will be hosting community workshops at the Olympic Community Police Station throughout September to educate seniors and their families on identifying and avoiding these scams.
Victims are encouraged to independently verify the data by contacting the alleged grandchild or other family members directly. The LAPD urges anyone who believes they have been targeted by a scam to immediately file a report with the department and contact their financial institution. Further information and resources are available on the LAPD website and through Courage’s helpline at 1-800-XXX-XXXX.
