RTÉ Signals Potential Eurovision Withdrawal Over Israel‘s Participation
RTÉ has announced it will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest should Israel be allowed to compete. The Irish broadcaster stated its position today, confirming the final decision will be made following a ruling from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding Israel’s involvement.
RTÉ cited the “ongoing and appalling loss of lives in Gaza” as the primary reason for its stance, adding deep concern over the targeted killing of journalists in the region, restricted access for international media, and the situation of hostages still held.
Ireland has been a consistent participant in the Eurovision Song Contest since 1965,achieving a record of seven wins. This year, Emmy represented Ireland in Basel, Switzerland, performing “Laika Party.”
The 70th anniversary edition of the contest is scheduled to be held in Vienna, Austria next May, following the victory of Austrian entry JJ with his song “Wasted love” at the 2025 contest in Basel.
Growing controversy surrounding Israel’s participation has fueled demonstrations in recent host cities, including Basel this year and Malmö, Sweden in 2024.
RTÉ, alongside broadcasters from Spain and Slovenia, had previously requested consultations with the EBU regarding Israel’s participation. The EBU responded by committing to dialogue on the issue and extending the deadline for broadcasters to withdraw from the 2026 contest without penalty to December.
The EBU is an alliance comprised of public service media organizations within the European Broadcasting Area and member states of the Council of Europe. Concerns about Israel’s participation were initially raised by several EBU members following a General Assembly in July. Yuval Raphael represented Israel in the 2025 contest with the song “New Day Will Rise.”
RTÉ expressed gratitude to the EBU for the extensive consultation process initiated following the July meeting.
