WhatsApp Updates Chat Themes, Addresses Read Receipt Visibility for Beta Users
New Delhi – September 10, 2025 – WhatsApp is rolling out an update to its chat themes for select beta users, aiming to improve the visibility of message read receipts. The update addresses a recent issue where read receipts appeared as white check marks in certain themes, hindering clear message confirmation.
The change stems from WhatsApp’s effort to enhance visual accessibility. previously, the standard blue check mark clashed with the white color scheme of some chat themes, making it arduous to discern whether a message had been read. To remedy this, WhatsApp initially adjusted the read receipt color to white in specific themes, providing better contrast against dark backgrounds. However, this solution proved imperfect, occasionally resulting in read receipts not displaying correctly – appearing as white marks without clear confirmation.According to a report by Wabetanfo,the issue arose as the blue check mark didn’t harmonize with the white color of some messages. The platform prioritized accessibility by opting for white in the initial chat theme adjustment.The update is currently being tested with beta users and is expected to improve the overall user experience by ensuring consistent and clear read receipt visibility across all chat themes. The rollout follows recent data security concerns involving customer data leaks linked to LG Uplus, Anth, and mobile payment systems confirmed by KT and KT Corp. - though these are unrelated to the chat theme update.
