Metro State University to host Free Cybersecurity Awareness Event for the Community
ST. PAUL, MN – In response to recent cyberattacks impacting the Twin Cities, Metro State University is offering a free cybersecurity awareness event, “Think Safe Be Safe,” on October 18, 2025. The event is open to all community members, students, and local organizations and will be held at the university’s Cyber Security Center.
The initiative aims to bolster digital literacy and resilience throughout Minnesota, especially following a notable cyberattack on the city of Saint Paul. That attack, which prompted Mayor Melvin Carter to declare a state of emergency, disrupted critical municipal services including payment platforms, library access, and internal networks. Governor Tim Walz activated the minnesota National Guard‘s cyber protection unit to assist wiht recovery,noting that “The scale and complexity of this incident exceeded both internal and commercial response capabilities.”
“Cybersecurity isn’t just a technical issue-it’s a human one,” explained Dr.Faisal Kaleem,Director of Cybersecurity and Cyber Operations Programs at Metro State University. “Every person in our community plays a role in protecting our shared digital environment. ’Think Safe Be Safe’ is about empowering people with the knowlege and tools to make smart, safe choices online.”
The event will feature interactive workshops, expert-led sessions, and practical demonstrations focused on protecting personal data and privacy. Attendees are encouraged to bring their laptops, tablets, and phones to take advantage of free vulnerability checks provided by students in Metro State’s Cybersecurity Clinic, under the supervision of experienced professionals. The clinic also offers these free assessments to small businesses, nonprofits, and schools.
Registration for “Think safe Be Safe” is free, and attendees are encouraged to RSVP using the provided QR code.
