Ryder Cup Team Member Tyrrell Hatton Admits to “Wild” Celebrations, Predicts Potential Repeat
ROME – Tyrrell Hatton revealed he celebrated securing his spot on the European Ryder Cup team with such enthusiasm that he ended up vomiting, acknowledging a history of overcelebration following significant wins.Hatton, a member of the LIV Golf tour, confessed he initially believed he’d missed automatic qualification but was later informed he’d made the team due to a lack of point-earning opportunities for competitors at the season-ending FedEx Cup events.
Hatton’s reaction underscores the intense pressure and high stakes surrounding the Ryder Cup, a biennial competition that pits Europe against the United States. The Ryder Cup is renowned for its passionate atmosphere and the significant emotional investment players have in representing their continent. Hatton’s candid admission highlights the weight of this portrayal and the resulting release of tension upon securing a place on the team.
“Qualifying for the team automatically was one of my main goals for this year,” Hatton said.He added, “I thought I had blown that chance after the Sunday I had at The Open, but then Luke [Donald] called me on the Sunday night of the second FedEx event to say that the guys weren’t earning points in Atlanta [at the season-ending Tour Championship] and I’d actually made the team automatically.”
Hatton acknowledged a prior tendency to overindulge in celebrations, referencing a similar experience after the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris. He anticipates a similar level of revelry should Europe secure a victory, predicting, “I’d like to think that we would celebrate pretty well, and there is a good chance I will be throwing up, but hopefully I’m not falling asleep and I can enjoy most of the night with everyone.”
Hatton’s place on the team was confirmed a month after The Open, where a 1-over final round initially appeared to jeopardize his automatic qualification. No other player was able to surpass his point total, solidifying his position among the top six European players. This will be Hatton’s fourth appearance representing Europe in the Ryder Cup.
