Morocco’s EESC Prioritizes Francophone Collaboration for Sustainable Development

brussels, Belgium – Abdelkader Amara, President of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (EESC) of the Kingdom of Morocco, participated in a pivotal meeting in Brussels on Monday, focusing on strengthening collaboration within the Francophone world. The meeting, the first of the Office of the Union of Economic and Social Councils and similar French-speaking institutions (UCESIF) under its 2025-2028 mandate, was held under the Ivorian presidency.
Hosted at the headquarters of the Central Council of the Belgian economy, the meeting was chaired by Eugène Aka Aouélé, the newly appointed President of UCESIF. Key discussions centered on defining the priorities for the Francophone Union over the next four years and identifying synergistic opportunities between the Francophone network and the Union of Economic and Social Councils and similar institutions of Africa (UCESA), which is currently chaired by Mr. Amara.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to advancing the implementation of a crucial document on water governance, titled “Strengthen water governance in French-speaking space through the Eau-Energy-Ecosystems nexus.” This initiative, developed with the support of the EESC Morocco and UCESA, aims to address critical water resource challenges across Francophone nations.
Mr. Amara emphasized the EESC of Morocco’s longstanding commitment to the role of UCESIF, recalling the council’s previous presidency (2015-2017). during that term, UCESIF adopted a social charter heavily influenced by the EESC Morocco’s own experiences and best practices.
Strengthening Advisory roles and Promoting Participatory Democracy
Accompanied by Younès benakki, Secretary General of the Council, Mr. Amara underscored the importance of mutual support among member organizations. he highlighted the vital role these councils play as advisory bodies shaping public policy, as well as their contributions to fostering social cohesion, equity, and justice through participatory democracy.
This meeting signals a renewed commitment to collaborative efforts within the Francophone space, with a particular emphasis on addressing shared challenges related to sustainable development, resource management, and social inclusion. The EESC Morocco’s active participation demonstrates its dedication to playing a leading role in these crucial initiatives.
