Qatar to Continue Mediation Despite Israeli Strike in Doha
Despite a recent Israeli airstrike in Doha targeting Hamas leaders, Qatar will continue its mediation efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza, according to reports.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the “surgical, precision” strike could pave the way for the “immediate” end of the war, adding that Israel has accepted a proposal put forward by President Trump to end the conflict, contingent on the immediate release of all hostages.
The strike occurred while Hamas leaders were gathered in doha discussing a response to the latest US principles aimed at ending the 23-month Gaza war. mr. Netanyahu was informed of a “unique window of chance” to target the leaders while attending a session in his corruption trial at the Tel Aviv district court, prompting him to instantly travel to Shin Bet headquarters. The operation involved ten Israeli aircraft – fighter jets, refuelling aircraft, intelligence-gathering planes, and drones – travelling approximately 1,800km to Doha. However, Israeli officials maintain a ceasefire is not imminent and claim Hamas has no intention of releasing the 48 hostages, 20 of whom are believed to still be alive.
The strike has sparked concern among families of the hostages. Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan is held by Hamas, expressed fear that the action may have jeopardized her son’s life, stating, “I am trembling with fear… It could be that at this vrey moment the prime minister has actually assassinated my Matan, sealed his fate. Why does he insist on blowing every chance at a deal? This is my child’s life!”
Opposition leader Yair Lapid has called on the government to clarify whether the Doha strike endangered the hostages and whether the risk to their lives was considered before authorizing the operation. He acknowledged Hamas members were likely to die but stressed the need for clarity regarding the hostages’ safety.
Israeli attacks on Gaza City continued following the strike.
