Apple Debuts Custom ⁣N1 Chip for ‌Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth⁣ 6, and Thread in Latest‌ iPhones

Apple is expanding its silicon ambitions beyond processors ⁣with the introduction of the N1‌ chip, now featured in its newest iPhone models.⁢ This marks the company’s first time designing its⁢ own Wi-fi and Bluetooth ‍connectivity solution for iPhones,⁢ previously relying largely‌ on Broadcom for these components. The N1 supports ‌the latest wireless ‌standards, ⁢including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, ‍and Thread.

While⁣ Apple has not‍ detailed⁢ the technical ⁤specifications of the N1 or the ⁣reasoning behind ⁤the shift in suppliers, the company states the chip will improve the reliability of‍ Continuity features. These‌ include Personal⁢ Hotspot and AirDrop, which utilize Bluetooth for initial connection and Wi-Fi for faster data transfer.⁤ Features like using an ⁣iPad as a secondary display for a Mac are also expected to see performance gains.

This ⁣isn’t Apple’s first foray into integrated wireless ‍technology. The W-series chips power Bluetooth‍ and ‌Wi-Fi in Apple Watches, and the H1 and H2 chips provide Bluetooth connectivity ⁢for AirPods and other wireless⁤ headphones. ⁤However, the N1 represents ‍a significant step forward, indicating the maturity of Apple’s wireless chip design capabilities to meet the demands of its flagship iPhones.Looking ahead, ‍Apple is expected to integrate the N1⁢ and ⁤future N-series chips into other product⁣ lines. ‌Macs⁢ and iPads are likely candidates, but the inclusion of Thread support also⁢ points to potential use in smart home devices such as the Apple TV⁤ and HomePod.
