Global Attacks on Education Surge, Threatening a Generation

New data released today reveals a harrowing 44 percent increase in attacks on schools over the past year, jeopardizing the education and lives of countless children caught in armed conflict. The surge, highlighted by the United Nations on the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, underscores a growing trend of violence deliberately targeting learning environments, resulting in deaths, abductions, and widespread trauma.

These attacks have devastating consequences, extending far beyond individual students and teachers to impact the stability and future prospects of entire communities and nations. The United Nations is actively working to combat this escalating crisis and uphold the fundamental right to education, even in the moast dangerous regions. However, UN officials stress that a global response is critical.

“No child should risk death to learn,” a statement from the UN emphasized.

The UN is calling on all nations to prioritize investment in inclusive education systems and fully support and implement the Safe Schools Declaration – an intergovernmental political commitment to protect schools during armed conflict. Moreover, all parties involved in conflict are urged to adhere to international law, recognise schools as safe havens, and ensure accountability for those who perpetrate attacks. The message reinforces the enduring power of education, stating, “The pen, the book, and the classroom are all mightier than the sword.” The UN’s plea is a call to action to safeguard the right of every child to learn in safety and peace.
