WhatsApp Hidden Feature Frees Up Smartphone Storage
WhatsApp, used by an estimated 32 million people in france, can quickly consume smartphone storage due to automatic media downloads. A little-known function within the app allows users to reclaim gigabytes of space by deleting large, unneeded files without manually searching through their gallery.
The feature is accessible through WhatsApp’s settings. Users on Android should navigate via the three-dot menu, while iPhone users will find it under the “Settings“ tab. Selecting “Storage and Data” reveals options to manage media storage and quality.Choosing “Manage storage” displays the total space occupied by WhatsApp, often amounting to several gigabytes.
Within “Manage storage,” selecting “Go back and delete the items” lists all media files exceeding 5 MB. Users can then individually select files for deletion, sort by size, or delete all at once using the trash-shaped icon. Deleted media can be re-downloaded from the original chat if needed.Adjusting automatic media download settings after clearing space will help prevent future storage issues. This process can free up significant storage on devices with limited internal memory, such as those with 64 or 128 GB.
