Drone Strike Disrupts Southern Israel Airport, Escalating Regional Tensions
ILIM, Israel – A drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck Israel’s southern airport near the Red Sea resort city of Eilat on Wednesday, prompting a temporary flight suspension and raising concerns about the expanding reach of the conflict. Israeli officials confirmed the attack, stating the drone was intercepted by air defense systems, though debris caused minor damage to the facility.
The incident marks a significant escalation in the regional unrest stemming from the ongoing war in Gaza, demonstrating the houthis’ capacity to project force over considerable distances and their willingness to directly target Israel. This attack, coupled with ongoing Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea, threatens vital trade routes and underscores the risk of a wider regional war. The Houthis, who are backed by iran, claim their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians and aim to pressure Israel to halt its military operations in gaza.
According to Hamas official Bassem Naim, the militant group is prepared for a long-term truce and will release the 48 hostages still held in gaza in exchange for the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel and a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. Naim stated Hamas is awaiting Israel’s response to a 60-day ceasefire proposal put forward by Egyptian and Qatari mediators last month. However, the Prime Minister’s Office has declined to comment on the status of negotiations.The conflict began on October 7,2023,when Hamas militants infiltrated southern Israel,killing approximately 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 others. Since then, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has resulted in a staggering toll, with the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reporting 64,368 deaths and 162,776 injuries.The ministry acknowledges that the casualty figures do not differentiate between combatants and civilians, but notes that over half of those killed are women and children.
