Documentary on Gazan Girl’s Final Moments Wins Silver Lion at Venice film Festival
Venice, Italy – A documentary chronicling the final moments of Hind Rajab, a six-year-old Palestinian girl killed during Israel’s military operation in gaza in January, has been awarded second place – the Silver Lion – at the 79th Venice Film Festival. The film, titled ”No One Will Save Us,” directed by Palestinian filmmaker Mohammed Najjar, offers a harrowing account of Hind’s desperate plea for help as she and her family came under fire.
The recognition of Najjar’s film at a prestigious international festival underscores the growing global attention on the human cost of the conflict in Gaza. The documentary, compiled from footage shot by paramedics and family members, provides a visceral and deeply affecting portrayal of the civilian impact of the ongoing hostilities, raising critical questions about accountability and the protection of children in conflict zones. The film’s award comes amidst heightened scrutiny of the situation in Gaza following the October 7 attacks by Hamas and israel’s subsequent military response.
According to reports, hind Rajab, along with her mother, father, and three siblings, were traveling in a car on January 29 when it was struck by Israeli fire. Hind and her aunt were the only survivors, trapped in the vehicle while desperately calling for rescue. Paramedics attempted to reach them, documenting their efforts, but were reportedly prevented from doing so by ongoing fighting. Hind was later found dead, along with her mother, father, and siblings.”No One Will Save Us” premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 8, promptly sparking both praise for its artistic merit and controversy regarding its subject matter. The film’s Silver Lion award is expected to further amplify its reach and contribute to ongoing discussions about the conflict and its devastating consequences for palestinian civilians.
