Technicolor Brand Sold After Company’s Bankruptcy,Future Remains Colorful
HOLLYWOOD – The once-dominant Technicolor,a name synonymous with the golden age of cinema, has been sold for €1.25 million following years of financial struggles and a recent bankruptcy. While the company as it was known has dissolved, the iconic Technicolor brand itself lives on, acquired by a firm specializing in intellectual property.
Technicolor faced headwinds common across Hollywood in recent years: shrinking profit margins, increased competition from studios developing in-house visual effects and postproduction capabilities, and a costly battle for top talent. These challenges were compounded in 2023 by the simultaneous writers’ and actors’ strikes, which substantially depleted project pipelines.
The buyer, Establish, a company holding a portfolio of well-known trademarks including the RCA logo, intends to explore a wide range of potential applications for the Technicolor name. According to Establish’s general director, Hall O’Donnell, the brand “enjoys great recognition in the United States and worldwide.”
O’Donnell suggested possibilities beyond film and television, envisioning the Technicolor name appearing on products ranging from clothing and consumer technology to a line of brightly colored home paints. “Consumers could see the Technicolor name again in any product,” he stated.
For decades, Technicolor was a pioneering force in filmmaking, renowned for it’s vibrant color processes that brought classics like The Wizard of Oz and gone With The wind to life. The sale marks the end of an era for the company, but signals a potential rebirth for the brand in unexpected sectors.
