Miami Yoga Studio Bans Filming as Content Creation Clashes with Student Privacy
MIAMI, FL - Mimi Yoga Studio in Miami has implemented a new policy prohibiting filming during classes, a move sparked by concerns over student privacy and the increasing presence of social media content creators. The studio, popular with influencers, announced the ban via Instagram, citing a desire to foster a more pleasant and focused environment for all attendees.
The decision comes as yoga studios nationwide grapple with balancing the potential marketing benefits of user-generated content with the rights of students to practice without being recorded. While some creators can reportedly earn upwards of $1,000 from a single 60-second clip of a yoga class, according to tiktoker Giselle (@giiiiselle__), the practice has led to overcrowding of classes by those seeking content and anxieties among students uncomfortable with being filmed.
“I don’t necessarily think it’s fair to ban filming in every class - because it’s also exposure and marketing for the studio,” Giselle stated in a TikTok video. Though, other creators acknowledge the need for boundaries. “I totally get the no filming policy,” said lifestyle creator Melanie Suger (@melaniesugt) in a TikTok post, adding that she recently attended a class where “two straight rows were just girls filming.”
The studio’s announcement has been met with largely positive feedback from patrons, many of whom expressed relief at the prospect of a more private practice space. “I love it tbh.I’m ALL for content especially capturing the vibe of a class but it’s so much more important than people feel comfortable to move through their workout in peace,” one commenter wrote. Another shared, “I can now breathe knowing I don’t need to be making my best faces & tucking in my stomach 🧚🏼♀️😂.”
