Majorca Imposes strict Water Restrictions as Drought Fears Escalate

Soller,‌ Majorca – Popular tourist ⁤destination Soller in Majorca ‌has implemented a ‍series of stringent water conservation measures amid⁣ growing concerns over a severe drought. the restrictions⁢ impact ​both residents and the vital tourism sector, including hotels, holiday⁣ rentals, bars, restaurants, and cafeterias, as officials⁤ warn of a perhaps “critical​ moment” if ⁢action⁣ isn’t taken.

The local​ council ‌has prohibited the filling of swimming pools and‌ is urging the ‌public too‍ limit shower ⁢times. ​Public showers at beaches, sports ⁣facilities, and clubs have been suspended. Street ⁤and ​square cleaning is now⁤ strictly limited to situations posing health or​ safety​ risks.

Beyond public use, ‍hotels and other tourism businesses​ are banned ⁣from irrigating gardens and washing vehicles or ‍boats.⁣ ⁢ The council is‍ also mandating ⁣that washing machines and ⁣dishwashers are​ only operated ⁣when fully loaded. Cleaning ⁣of terraces and facades ​is ⁢similarly restricted to essential health⁣ and safety concerns.

“If we do not take measures soon, we will ⁣reach a critical moment, ‌which is ​why it is important to start acting to preserve our water resources and guarantee‌ that the entire population has water without having to ⁤take more restrictive measures,” a council statement read.

The measures, which are “in force until further notice,” were implemented after weeks of consultation with ​the hotel and business⁤ sectors to determine the best approach to ‍water conservation. The council emphasized the urgency, noting that rain ‌is “non-existent in the ‍short ‌term.”

“Every gesture counts: ⁤if we all assume our share of responsibility and act conscientiously, ⁢we will avoid tougher restrictions in the immediate future…” the​ council added, appealing for widespread cooperation. ‍

Soller is currently operating under a⁢ drought⁤ warning, and officials are hoping these measures ‍will⁢ prevent the situation from ⁤worsening.
