RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - International architecture and design firm LAVA has unveiled its masterplan for the Expo 2030 Riyadh, envisioning a enduring and immersive experience centered around a ring-shaped venue inspired by ancient Arabian necklaces. The plan, revealed today, positions the Expo site as a catalyst for long-term urban growth and a showcase for Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.
The winning bid for hosting Expo 2030 is projected to bring an estimated 43 million visitors to Riyadh and contribute over $31.6 billion to the Saudi Arabian economy. LAVA’s design aims to deliver on this promise by creating a memorable and future-focused event, while simultaneously establishing a vibrant, post-Expo legacy district. The masterplan focuses on walkability, public transport, and integrating nature within a high-tech environment, reflecting the Expo’s theme of “The Art of Making Progress.”
At the heart of the masterplan lies “The Ring,” a 600-meter diameter circular structure that will house the core exhibition spaces. Drawing inspiration from conventional Arabian jewelry, the Ring’s design incorporates a series of interconnected pavilions and gardens, fostering a sense of community and exploration. surrounding the Ring, LAVA has designed thematic districts dedicated to innovation, sustainability, culture, and entertainment.
“We wanted to create a place that feels both futuristic and deeply rooted in Saudi culture,” said Chris Bosse, LAVA’s Director. “The Ring is a symbol of connection and collaboration, reflecting the Expo’s ambition to bring the world together.”
The masterplan prioritizes sustainability through the use of renewable energy sources, water conservation strategies, and locally sourced materials. A comprehensive public transportation network, including a dedicated metro line, will connect the Expo site to the wider city, minimizing reliance on private vehicles. Following the six-month Expo, the site is slated to be transformed into a thriving mixed-use district, featuring residential, commercial, and cultural spaces.
Expo 2030 Riyadh is scheduled to run from October 1, 2030, to March 31, 2031. Construction of the masterplan is expected to begin in 2024.
