A young man was fatally shot in Callao, Peru, while standing with his mother, authorities reported Wednesday. The incident occurred in the Centenary urbanization of the Constitutional Province.
The shooting unfolded as Doris Graciela López,50,and her son,Kevin pereda Valladares,25,were at the entrance to their home when two assailants opened fire. Pereda Valladares died en route to Daniel Alcides carrión National Hospital from gunshot wounds to the torso and neck. His mother remains hospitalized with a reserved prognosis. The attack has renewed concerns about rising violence in the area, despite the proximity of a local citizen security post.
Police have launched an investigation into the shooting. Sources within the National Police identified the victims and confirmed Pereda Valladares had a prior criminal record including aggravated theft, threats, material damage, and aggravated assault. The motive remains under investigation.
