Jannik Sinner stormed into the US Open semi-finals with a dominant victory over fellow Italian Lorenzo Musetti, winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 late Wednesday night in New York. The defending champion continued his impressive run at the tournament, needing just over two hours to dispatch his compatriot.
Sinner’s commanding performance puts him within reach of a historic achievement: becoming the first player to defend the US Open title since Roger Federer‘s streak from 2004 to 2008. The 24-year-old has already secured major titles this year at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and narrowly missed victory at the French open. “It means a lot to me. It was a great, solid performance,” Sinner said after the match.
The world No. 10 controlled the match from the outset, never relinquishing his serve against the one-year-younger Musetti. This victory marks the first time Italy has had two players reach the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament.
Sinner will face Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the semi-finals on Friday. Auger-Aliassime previously eliminated Alexander Zverev in the third round. The othre semi-final will pit Spain’s carlos Alcaraz against Novak Djokovic of Serbia, a 24-time Grand Slam tournament winner.
