hyundai Motor Expands Pediatric Cancer Support Program globally
WASHINGTON D.C. – November 3, 2023 – Hyundai Motor announced today it will extend its “hyundai Hope on Wheels” program, dedicated to pediatric cancer research adn treatment, to Europe and India in 2024. The expansion builds on the program’s 27-year history of support, beginning in the United States in 1998.
Hyundai Hope on Wheels has donated $270 million (approximately 3.7 trillion won) to date, with $27 million awarded in the U.S. this year alone. The program now encompasses North America, including participation from Hyundai’s Canadian and Mexican subsidiaries and dealer networks.
In Canada, $2.9 million was donated through 226 dealers to fund research and raise awareness in partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL). Mexico received $694,000 to support leukemia patients and enhance hospital equipment.
The 27th anniversary event, held at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., was attended by Hyundai Motor executives, U.S. dealers, medical professionals, and pediatric cancer patients.
“The five-year survival rate of children with cancer in 2025 is projected to be 85%, a important enhancement from 56% in 1975,” stated Jose Munnus, CEO of Hyundai Motor, citing data from the American Cancer Association.
Dan Wexler,of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Medical advisory Commitee,highlighted the program’s impact: “Since its launch,there has been major progress in improving treatment rates and long-term access to care.”
A central component of Hyundai Hope on Wheels is the annual ”Hand-Print Ceremony,” held each September during Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month. The event involves patients, medical staff, and Hyundai representatives creating handprints on a vehicle, symbolizing solidarity and hope. This year,the ceremony will take place at over 70 hospitals nationwide,with donation details to be announced later this month.Hyundai Motor also hosted a U.S. Congress Reception and Survivor Summit to address the importance of post-treatment care and future challenges faced by survivors.
