WhatsApp Introduces AI-Powered “Writing Help” Feature
WhatsApp has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature called “Writing Help” designed to assist users in crafting messages. The tool, powered by Meta AI, offers suggestions for rephrasing and adjusting the tone of messages to suit various dialogue styles.
Meta explains that Writing Help aims to help users who struggle with articulating their thoughts or finding the right words. the feature allows users to refine messages to be more professional, humorous, supportive,or simply clearer. Users can review AI-generated suggestions in different styles and further edit them before sending.
According to a post on the official WhatsApp blog (August 27, 2025), users can access writing Help by tapping a pencil icon that appears next to the message input field while composing a message in both individual and group chats. The AI then provides alternative sentence options. Such as,a message like “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa” could be rephrased with options like “Please do not make the sofa a grave of socks,” “Latest news: socks found relaxing on the sofa. Please move,” or “Hey,ninja socks, laundry baskets are there!”
Privacy is a key focus of the feature. Meta emphasizes that Writing Help utilizes private processing technology, meaning neither Meta nor WhatsApp reads the original message or the AI’s suggestions. The technology has undergone rigorous testing and audits by autonomous security firms like NCC Group and Trail of Bits to ensure user data remains secure.
Meta also states that the feature is optional and remains inactive by default, allowing users to control their experience on the platform. Users can deactivate Writing Help at any time.
The introduction of Writing Help appears to be a move by whatsapp to provide a built-in solution for message composition, potentially reducing reliance on external AI tools like ChatGPT. While the feature aims to improve communication efficiency, Meta acknowledges that some users may prefer the authenticity of unassisted writing.
Currently, Writing Help is available in English and has been rolled out to a limited number of countries.
