Ryder Cup Anticipation Builds as Lowry Predicts More Restrained U.S. Fans, Schauffele’s Father Announces Boycott
FARMINGDALE, NY - As the 2025 Ryder Cup approaches Bethpage Black, Irish golfer Shane Lowry has offered a surprising assessment of the anticipated fan atmosphere, suggesting New York supporters may prove more welcoming to the European team than their Midwestern counterparts. Meanwhile, the father of American star Xander Schauffele has announced he will boycott the event, citing concerns over escalating hostility between fans and players.
Lowry, speaking ahead of the competition, expressed confidence that the notoriously outspoken New York sports fans would offer a different experience than previous Ryder Cup locations. “I know there won’t be as many European fans as Americans this time but there will still be a few, and I imagine the few that come will bring their support,” Lowry said.”There’s been a lot of talk about what it’s going to be like at Bethpage. If there’s one thing I know for sure,I know Luke Donald and his team had have us ready to go when it comes to that Friday morning.” Lowry’s comments imply a belief that New York fans, despite their reputation for directness, will be less uncivil than those in the Midwest, who are often characterized as more polite.
However, this prediction contrasts with the history of the event at Bethpage Black, specifically the 2002 U.S. Open, were European players Collin Montgomerie and Sergio Garcia faced relentless heckling from the American crowd.Adding to the tension surrounding the upcoming Ryder Cup, Stefan Schauffele, father of Xander Schauffele, revealed in a July interview with The Times of London that he will not attend the competition. He cited instances of unacceptable behavior at recent events as the reason for his decision.
Schauffele specifically referenced the 2021 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits, where he alleges that Lowry’s wife was subjected to abusive language in front of the golfer. “No. I’m not going to the Ryder Cup,” Schauffele told The Times. “I’m afraid of what’s going to happen in New York. I was there…when they called Shane Lowry’s wife a w– in front of him. I couldn’t believe my ears.”
He also pointed to the contentious interactions during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, involving Rory McIlroy,Lowry, and American player Patrick Cantlay, along with caddies Joe LaCava and Jim “Bones” Mackay,as evidence of a deteriorating atmosphere. “I saw what happened in Rome. That was utterly disgusting claiming this money bull-t and Rory [McIlroy] behaved disgustingly in my opinion. It’s only going to get worse. It’s ruined my appetite for the Ryder Cup. It becomes unwatchable,” Schauffele stated.
The 2025 Ryder Cup is scheduled to begin September 26th at bethpage State Park.
